چکیده

AbstractIt is critically important to intensify farming systems in sub-Saharan Africa by disseminating improved agronomic practices and increasing the application of modern inputs (Chaps. 1 2 this volume). One region’s challenges that proper land preparation difficult due scarcity draft animals underdevelopment tractor rental market (Chap. 7). Our analysis rice production Cote d’Ivoire reveals farmers who use two-wheel tractors are more likely adopt proper, labor-intensive cultivation apply fertilizer intensively, thereby raising productivity. Thus, diffusion appears be critical intensification rice-farming Africa.

Assessing the impacts of agricultural intensification on biodiversity: a British perspective.

Agricultural intensification is best considered as the level of human appropriation of terrestrial net primary production. The global value is set to increase from 30%, increasing pressures on biodiversity. The pressures can be classified in terms of spatial scale, i.e. land cover, landscape management and crop management. Different lowland agricultural landscapes in Great Britain show differen...

Agricultural intensification and ecosystem properties.

Expansion and intensification of cultivation are among the predominant global changes of this century. Intensification of agriculture by use of high-yielding crop varieties, fertilization, irrigation, and pesticides has contributed substantially to the tremendous increases in food production over the past 50 years. Land conversion and intensification, however, also alter the biotic interactions a...

Ecological impacts of arable intensification in Europe.

Although arable landscapes have a long history, environmental problems have accelerated in recent decades. The effects of these changes are usually externalized, being greater for society as a whole than for the farms on which they operate, and incentives to correct them are therefore largely lacking. Arable landscapes are valued by society beyond the farming community, but increased mechanizat...

INVITED REVIEW Sustainable intensification in agricultural systems

†Background Agricultural systems are amended ecosystems with a variety of properties. Modern agroecosystems have tended towards high through-flow systems, with energy supplied by fossil fuels directed out of the system (either deliberately for harvests or accidentally through side effects). In the coming decades, resource constraints over water, soil, biodiversity and land will affect agricultu...
